1. Introduction

Facial recognition technology is a biometric software application capable of uniquely identifying or verifying a person by comparing and analyzing patterns based on the person’s facial contours. This technology is considered to be a very controversial topic when applied to the field of law enforcement. The history of facial recognition has come a long way since the 1960s where it was first implemented using very primitive methods. In fact, the initial and most widely used form of technology today is still principal component analysis, which is derived from the 1970s. Since then, there have been significant improvements in the two main types of recognition, including verification for an individual and identification with a one-to-many comparison. Due to recent advances in technology, it has provided new ways to verify a person’s identity and with the development program better algorithms for the comparison process. In recent years, there have been additional methods and features such as thermography, skin texture analysis, and 3D, which have become more feasible for practical use. Although each has provided positive ways to distinguish facial recognition, the increase of use for identification has stirred more controversy, especially when dealing with law enforcement.
