1. Introduction

The healthcare system in the United States is complex and constantly changing. Due to changing demographics and evolving societal norms, the healthcare system is becoming more and more complex, presenting new challenges for patients, providers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. For instance, the aging population has led to an increased demand for healthcare services. Advances in medical technology, a trend towards more outpatient and home-based care, and a growing focus on personalized medicine have also changed the landscape of the healthcare industry. There are many factors, both internal and external, that impact the healthcare system. Internal factors include issues such as organizational culture, leadership, and shared knowledge among the many entities that comprise the system. External forces that are transforming the system, including the development of new, more effective clinical treatments and the introduction of new information technologies, are also prevalent. Every healthcare system in the world is faced with similar challenges. Although national healthcare systems have their own unique set of problems, the shared global objective is to improve the health of entire populations while providing the best possible, most cost-effective care for individual patients. Before we talk about the specifics of the US healthcare system’s problems and possible solutions, let’s provide some background information.

1.1 Background

In the United States, healthcare is provided by a variety of different organizations and the majority of health insurances are private. Each state has its own laws and regulations when it comes to health insurance and ways in which healthcare is provided. However, in the USA there is no National Health Service – healthcare providers are independent and are largely not owned by the government. Today, more than 85% of physicians practice in smaller groups, with less than 10 doctors. More than half of all US hospitals are part of a system. Clinician practices are either individual or part of a small group, with only 11% having more than 19 clinicians. Hospitals are organized in systems which may be either multistate or regional, where ownership can vary and often includes physician and non-healthcare partners. Other care settings are primarily provided in freestanding facilities and to a lesser extent in nursing homes, inpatient residential services, and hospices. The differing ways in which health services are provided can be a source of many national health issues/stress. Healthcare costs in the USA are the highest in the world. This is leading to various problems with a rapidly aging population. The cost is driven by a number of factors, including the profit that can be made from private healthcare. Although the USA spends a greater portion of its gross domestic product on healthcare more than any other country in the Americas, it is ranked lowest in terms of quality and efficiency. The cost of healthcare in the USA can be expensive and is rising. We are yet to see the impact of the coronavirus on healthcare in the USA as many people are now unable to get working, and therefore their healthcare is funded and provided by their employers. With over 5 million confirmed cases in the USA, this will impact the current state of healthcare services in the country. Hurting lower income residents the most in terms of healthcare costs is the lack of a nationalized healthcare system. This is because people who are very poor can qualify for Medicaid where the government covers their health bills. However, for those citizens who do not fall into this bracket, all the bills must be paid by the individuals themselves. This creates inequality when it comes to treating patients and healthcare provision in different parts of the country. Focusing on mental health on a national level seems to be getting more attention from healthcare authorities. Work is being done to improve access and increase the quality of mental and substance abuse services and the laws are being changed to help the progress of mental health in America.

1.2 Purpose of the Study

The study aims to explore, identify, and analyze the various healthcare issues faced by the United States, which includes both national and state levels. Furthermore, it is important for policy makers to understand the root causes of these issues so that proper solutions can be crafted and implemented. With effective policies and their implementations, improvements can be brought about in the most crucial areas and every individual of the nation can expect to receive high standard quality healthcare services. Although the healthcare system that exists in the United States is continuously evolving, only a holistic and a careful analysis of the system can help in generating new initiatives. Such new initiatives are very much needed for the overall improvement of the system and for a better healthcare services and access for all. Despite the fact that the healthcare system in our country is actually very dynamic in nature and many parameters are continuously changing, it is also very odd and hard to understand the current and future challenges that the system will face. The better and improved access to healthcare services can only be achieved if it is universally acceptable at large. The best way to achieve improvement and work efficiently in finding different ways to reform the nation’s healthcare system is to understand in depth the key areas that need attention and for which area specific improvements are required. The lawmakers can play a major role in the healthcare system reformation as well. So, another purpose of undertaking this study is to provide valuable information to the policy makers and other relevant stakeholders. With the help of systematic information provided in this study, the policy makers can come up with engaging and relevant policy interventions to improve the overall healthcare system in the country.

1.3 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study was to evaluate the huge range of healthcare problems in the USA, identifying the most important national stressors, and analyzing what those stressors have the biggest impact on. As a result, this research covers a lot of different elements of the health care system. From issues to do with health insurance coverage, chronic diseases, patient safety and medical errors, and the challenges of health information technology, there are lots of different areas of study. This means that the research is relevant to a wide range of healthcare professionals, from those in the policy making world to health economists and medical professionals. By understanding the wide range of what the biggest stressors are, and what challenges they present, the hope is that a comprehensive and wide-ranging strategy for dealing with these issues will be implemented, and thus the American public can access better overall healthcare provisions. This means the study will involve looking at many statistics, patient surveys, the employment levels and distribution of healthcare staff and hospitals across the US, as well as a wide variety of different policy and research documents written by those working in the field. All of this research can then be triangulated together to form a clear view of what currently affects the healthcare system. In particular, the study examines how a set of health care system indicators are influenced by the largest stressors identified. There are many different aspects of the healthcare system that can be measured, from the amount of money spent to the number of different types of healthcare professionals per person in the country. However, it is important to understand how each of these different measures may be affected by what is identified as the biggest problems within the system. By doing so, healthcare policies can be better tailored to individual areas, and the analysis will show if certain national stressors have a greater influence on specific aspects of the system than others.
